China Suspends Boeing Jet Deliveries in Response to U.S. Tariffs

April 15: Tensions between the U.S. and China have intensified as Beijing has directed Chinese airlines to halt the receipt of new Boeing aircraft, following Washington’s move to impose steep new tariffs on Chinese imports.
According to a Bloomberg News report citing sources familiar with the matter, the Chinese government has instructed domestic carriers to pause deliveries of Boeing jets and refrain from purchasing U.S.-made aviation equipment and parts.
This decision comes on the heels of the Biden administration’s announcement of a 145% tariff hike on certain Chinese products, escalating an already strained trade relationship between the two global powers.
Boeing Hit, Airbus Gains Ground
Boeing, which has long viewed China as a critical growth market, saw its stock dip slightly, down by 0.5% in midday trading. Meanwhile, Airbus, Boeing’s main European rival, continues to maintain a strong foothold in the Chinese aviation sector.
China has increasingly leaned toward Airbus in recent years, and this latest move could further widen the gap between the two aircraft giants in one of the world’s largest aviation markets.
Beijing Weighs Airline Support
Sources also revealed that the Chinese government is exploring ways to assist airlines that are currently leasing Boeing planes, as these carriers are now facing increased operating costs due to the trade standoff. Potential support could come in the form of financial aid or policy relief to offset the burden.
A Sign of Escalating Trade Dispute
This development is seen as a direct response to the escalating trade war between the two economic superpowers. While Boeing had hoped for stabilization in U.S.-China relations to revive its commercial prospects in the region, this latest directive from Beijing signals deepening fractures.
Neither Boeing nor Chinese aviation authorities have publicly commented on the Bloomberg report at the time of publication.
